Have you ever thought, “I'd like to ask Sister about this”?
Here are some questions we have received so far in a Q&A format.
- What qualifications are necessary to become a sister?
-
There are no necessary qualifications. To have the desire of “Wanting to answer the invitation of Christ.
Wanting to follow Christ,” is very important. St. Francis expresses it in words like these:
“This is what I want, this is what I seek, this is what I long for with all my heart.” - Once I have entered, will I not be able to see my family anymore?
-
You will be given opportunities to visit your family.
- Are there applicants for becoming a sister?
-
At present (2025) there are two Candidate-Studens from Vietnam. They attend Japanese language school while experiencing Convent life and ascertaining their vocation.
- Is there any examination before entrance?
-
There is no special examination. However, since it is necessary to get to know each other, there are frequent opportunities to visit and speak with one another before entering.
- How many years does it take to become a sister?
-
For current Candidate-Studens, 1.5 to 2 years of Japanese language study after coming to Japan, then a period of 6 months to 2 years is spent becoming accustomed to our way of life (the stage before novitiate), 2 years of intensive preparation for religious life (novitiate), and after that pronouncing first vows she becomes a sister. Therefore, it depends on the individual, it takes about 4 to 5 years. If Japanese study is not necessary, it takes about 3 years.
- What does the Congregation do?
-
Our Congregation ministers in the health field, serving the poor and those in need, especially the sick, children with severe disabilities and elderly while proclaiming God’s Healing Love.
- Practically do you have any institutions?
-
Yes. The main facilities are hospitals, facilities for severely disabled children and health care facilities for the elderly.
- Do all the sisters work there?
-
Of course, the sisters work in hospitals, institutions for the severely disabled and health care facilities for the elderly, but we also work in the Convent, programs to assist those living on the streets and many other areas. The sisters joyfully fulfill their God-given mission in response to various requests. We also feel that the presence of sisters who are getting older, retired, and devoting themselves to the apostolate of prayer is also significant.
- I do not have any qualification for working in a hospital, would that be a handicap?
-
As mentioned in A2, at the time of entrance qualifications are not a problem. According to the abilities of the person, specialty study for future ministry may be obtained.
- How many Sisters are in Japan?
-
Currently, there are 50 Sisters in the Japan Province. Among them, we also serve in Germany, the U.S., and Vietnam. There are not only Japanese Sisters in the Japan Province, but also one American, one Korean, and 15 Vietnamese.

About our living - Do the sisters study the Bible or something?
-
The Bible is very important because it is Word of God has given to us. We sometimes invite lecturers for study, and once a year we have an opportunity to deepen our relationship with God through the Bible under the guidance of in a Priest in Retreat.
For the sisters, reading the Bible personally every day and receiving the message from God in it is an important daily source of sustenance. - Since the General Motherhouse is in Germany, do the sisters come and go to foreign countries?
-
Our Congregation is an international religious congregation and including meetings we have contact with sisters of other countries. Therefore, we have the opportunity to go to foreign countries and sisters from the other countries come to Japan.
- Then do you not need to know English or German?
-
To be able to speak English or Germany would be wonderful, but there is no need to worry. English can be learned before or during the novitiate,
- I am not sure if I can make up my mind to become a sister.
-
It is important to take time to think at your own pace through your path as a sister. It is perfectly fine to be anxious. We, too, have gone through a period of self-reflection and have started on the path of faith. Our Congregation is warmly
supportive to beginners and those who are anxious. In the process of becoming a sister, we grow little by little at our own pace, and our anxieties naturally dissipate as we walk with God. If you have any concerns or questions, we will support you politely, so please take the first step with an open heart. The path you walk as a sister is a path that follows God's guidance. - Is it possible to visit the Convent and look around?
-
Yes, we can. If you wish, please let us know in advance. The sister in charge will guide you through the process.
